Aware About Spinal Disc Problems & Its Treatment Procedures

These discs generally known as Intervertebral Discs or Intervertebral fibrocartilage. They are placed between the vertebrae and act as a ligament to hold them together in the spine. Spine discs are predominantly assigned as a shock absorber, besides it allows tiny movement in the spine.

Spinal Disc Problems

Each disc has two parts :
  • Annulus Fibrosus: It is a superficial ring of discs which consist of various layers of fibrocartilage.
  • Nucleus Pulposus: Gel like center which is in layers of fibrocartilage called Nucleus Pulposus that helps to distribute pressure across the disc. Contains mucoprotein gel where loose fibers are suspended.
Totally 23 vertebral discs are there in the spine. According to the damage with any disc, it may lead to different symptoms such as back pain, sciatica, neck pain etc.
There are different disc related issues. Some of them are:
  • Slipped disc
  • Degenerated disc
  • Pinched nerve
  • Bulging disc etc.

Slipped Disc

This condition also known as Herniated Disc. The disc's inner gel like center covered by a tough outer covering called Anulus Fibrosus. An injury or weakness in this ring leads to stick out of the inner portion of the disc. This state called Slipped Disc.
The lower back portion of the spine is the most common place for Slipped Disk.

Major symptoms are:
  • Pain and numbness on one side of body.
  • Pain that extends to arms or legs.
  • Pain that increases after standing or sitting.
  • Muscle weakness.
  • Burning sensations in affected area.
Herniated Disc

Degenerated Disc

Decay of disc with increase of age is known as Degenerated disc. Decrease in disc's fluid content, cracks or tears on disc leads to degeneration or break down of disk. A sudden injury may promote the process of degeneration.

Major symptoms are :
  • Back pain
  • Severe pain after sitting

Pinched Nerve

Nerve compression or Pinched nerves occur due to pressure on nerves that because of holding any body part in one position for a long time. It is also caused when the nerves are pressed between bone, tendon or ligament.

Major symptoms are :
  • Numbness
  • Weakness with activities
  • Pain in compressed parts

Bulging Disc

Outer ring of disc weakens with increase of age that cause stretching of outer ring due to pressure from Nucleus called disc bulging.
The most common area which affect the bulging of disc is lower back.

Major symptoms are :
  • Pain
  • Numbness
  • Weakness in arm, leg, neck.
Bulged Disc

Reasons of Spinal Disc Problems

  • Aging
  • Over weight lifting.
  • Lack of exercise.
  • Keeping same position for a long time.

Diagnosis

  • X-ray is used to get images of the spine. But it is not possible to a get clear view of soft tissue.
  • Magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) or computed tomography(CT) scan is used to get back clear view of soft and bony tissue.
  • Myelogram test that enables the doctor to see the spinal cord and spinal nerve roots.
  • Electromyelogram(EMG) is used to get the exact nerve which is affected.

Treatment

There are different treatments are available for spinal disc problems. They are,
  • Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation(TENS) method is used for temporary pain relief with a device that applies a small current on nerve which is not painful.
  • Acupuncture treatment gives relief from pain.
  • Epidurals steroid injection reduces inflammation which is the result of disk herniation.
  • Doctors suggest surgery for patients who show symptoms continuously. The various surgery methods are Microsurgery, Diskectomy, Spinal fusion, Laminotomy.

The Brain and Spine Centre or Gurukripa Advanced Neuro Care Institute provides you with all treatments related to Spinal Disc Problems like slipped disc, degenerated disc etc. and assisted with new facilities and expert surgeons.

Types of Stroke: Diagnosis & Treatment

Stroke is a condition referred to as cerebrovascular accident or cerebrovascular insult or we can call it as Brain Attack. The condition arises when blood flow to any part of the brain suddenly stops. This will damage brain cells and if not treated immediately it may lead to brain death. The condition needs urgent medical care and treatment. The lagging of treatment will make the patient's condition more critical.

There different types of stroke,
  1. Intracerebral Hemorrhage
  2. Subarachnoid Hemorrhage
http://www.thebrainandspine.com/stroke/

Intracerebral Hemorrhage

This type of stroke occurs mainly due to high blood pressure or hypertension. During that time the arteries of the blood vessels will break and blood will spread into brain tissues. These blood will clot and it is known as hematoma. This condition grows and surrounding tissues may incur pressure. Due to this, the person will be feeling tension and lethargic. At the mean time, the broken arteries will not supply blood to the specified areas and lead to stroke. Intracerebral Hemorrhage usually occur in basal ganglia, cerebellum, brain stem, cortex.

  • Vomiting
  • Sudden weakness
  • Seizures
  • Nausea
  • Temporary loss of vision etc

Diagnosis

When a person shows symptoms of Intracerebral Hemorrhage, then immediate medical care should be given. If ignored may lead to unconsciousness & death. This can be diagnosed with CT Scan, MRI Scan or Angiogram

CT Scan or Computed Tomography: The scan will produce brain images, that will explain any damage or fracture & bleeding inside the brain.

MRI Scan or Magnetic Resonance Imaging: It is more clear than CT scan. MRI will recognise any deep brain damage or injury.

Angiogram: This is done for seeing the blood flow through arteries.

Treatment

Treatment includes both surgical and non surgical. According to the patient's condition and the time delay occurred after Intracerebral Hemorrhage may decide the treatment method. Usually surgical method is used to remove the blood clot and reduce the pressure. The doctor will also consider the area of brain to which it happened. If it is not possible for a surgery then control of blood pressure, intracranial pressure may decrease the risk of bleeding and removal of cerebrospinal fluid from ventricle are other methods.

Common surgeries for Intracerebral Hemorrhage are craniotomy & steriotactic aspiration.

Subarachnoid Hemorrhage

Subarachnoid Hemorrhage occur because of the bleeding in subarachnoid space which is between the brain and thin tissues that protect the brain. This will immediately generate a severe headache in patient. Subarachnoid Hemorrhage can be caused because of several problems like,
  • Ruptured cerebral aneurysm
  • Head injury etc

Symptoms are,

Sudden headache or thunderclap headache is the main symptom of Subarachnoid Hemorrhage.

Other symptoms are,

  • Eyelid drooping
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Muscle aches
  • Stiff neck
  • Seizure
  • Decrease consciousness & alertness etc

Diagnosis

Subarachnoid Hemorrhage is diagnosed using several techniques like CT scan, MRI scan, cerebral angiography, transcranial doppler ultrasound etc.

Treatment

Surgery is the main option for the treatment which focuses on saving the person's life who affected with Subarachnoid Hemorrhage. Also tries to prevent it from further occurrence. The main surgeries are craniotomy & endovascular coiling.

All You Need To Know About Brain Tumor!

The disease condition called Brain Tumor or Intracranial Neoplasm occurs when a mass of abnormal cells grow inside the brain. This happens when the normal metabolism of brain differs. Normally cells grow and will get old & dies. Then new cells grow, but this process may go wrong. The old or damaged cells may not die & new extra cells grows. These extra cells will form as a mass & becomes tumor.

Brain tumor

Brain Tumor can be benign & malignant. Some of the benign tumors are not cancerous because it doesn't contain cancer cells and can be cured.
Benign tumors will not spread into other parts of the body. It has a specific border or edge. Sometimes it may change into Malignant tumors & may cause health problems.
Malignant or Cancerous Tumors are more dangerous and is a threat to life. This tumors contains cancer cells. It grows rapidly & can spread into healthy brain areas. Exact reason behind the occurrence of Brain tumors are unknown. Some of the reasons which may be the cause are radiation, inherited diseases etc.

Symptoms

The symptoms of brain tumor depends upon the size, location of the growth & age of a person. We get signs & symptoms only when it harms a part of brain or it presses on a nerve or blocks the fluid in brain etc.

headache

The common symptoms are,
  • Headaches
  • Vomiting & Nausea
  • Weakness in one side of body
  • Difference in vision, hearing, sensory & speech
  • Loss of concentration
  • Memory Loss
  • Emotional Changes etc.

Treatment

Treatment is also depends on size of tumor, location of tumor and age & health of a person. For most brain tumors surgery is recommended as the first step. After that other treatments like radiation therapy & chemotherapy will be given for slowing down the growth. In some cases, the doctor may not be possible to remove the tumor by surgery. In that case, treatments like radiation therapy & chemotherapy is recommended.

Surgeries
Common surgeries done are,
Craniotomy: It is common surgery done by removing a part of skull and is replaced after the surgery. This surgery is done after MRI scanning.

Craniotomy

Shunt: This procedure is done for relieve the intracranial pressure caused by tumor blocking the brain fluid pathway. The excess fluid will be drained out with the shunt procedure.
Stereotactic Surgery: Stereotactic surgery or Stereotaxy is done to find out the position & location of the tumor. It is a minimal invasive type of surgery uses a three dimensional image to locate the tumor. This is also used to remove the tumor and for other treatments.
Endoscopic &Endoscope Assisted Surgery: It is done by making small incisions or through natural openings of the body. Through this the doctors will be able to visualize the affected areas which is difficult to reach.
