Meningiomas – Surgical Removal

Meningiomas grow on the brain surface and push the brain instead of growing from within it. Most of the meningiomas are “benign” because they grow very slowly with low potential to spread. The meningiomas occur in the brain but also can grow on the spinal cord parts.

There are different types of meningiomas such as Simple convexity meningioma, Complex skull base meningioma and, Intra-ventricular meningioma.
Grade 0 and Grade 1 methods are quite curable by removing the same. The tumor causes pressure on the brain and spine. Specific parts of the brain, blood vessels, nerves, surrounding the tumor may be affected directly by the pressure of the tumor. Meningiomas cannot be determined unless symptoms are noticed.
  • Severe headaches
  • Blurred vision
  • Seizures
  • Changes in the memory
  • Vomiting

Different site meningiomas cause different symptoms

  • Falx and Parasagittal Meningiomas: Located adjacent to the dural fold which separates the two brain hemispheres
  • Olfactory Groove Meningioma:  It forms in the nerves that connect the nose to the brain.
  • Posterior fossa Meningioma: Occurs at the back of the brain.
  • Suprasellar or planum Meningioma: Located near the skull area where the pituitary gland is present
  • Spinal Meningioma: Located in the spine, in some cases against the spinal cord.
  • Intraorbital Meningioma: This kind of meningioma forms in the eye socket or around the eye socket
  • Intraventricular Meningioma: Located in the chambers through which cerebrospinal fluid is carried throughout the brain.
Diagnosis is done through CT and a contrasted MRI Scan as other medical conditions possess the same symptoms.

Treatment Options

Surgery

The best option for a brain tumor is the microsurgical removal of the tumor. The main goal of the surgery is to remove meningioma entirely with the Dural attachment and the penetrated bone. Removing the entire tumor is quite risky when it has veins or small arteries or brain tissue penetration. The patient’s safety is taken as the main priority in the meningioma surgery. If the entire process is found to be at risk, the surgery will be abandoned. If there are any changes found in the residual tumor through imaging tests then, the patient is administered with a stereotactic radiation therapy.
